R help - Oct 2008 - Questions on code compilation of R by Luke

Hello All,

            I came across following docs/links on the current work by Luke
for code compilation/byte code for R.

which indicates that we can use cmpfun through compiler package. However, I
have a few questions:

1) What is the current status of code compilation in R.
2) Are people using code compilation in production systems?
3) Is compiler package available as part of CRAN? If not, any pointers from
where I can download
