Sorry about the earlier confusion. I'll start fresh here.
I'm getting these error messages when I run "make".
begin installing recommended package foreign

I'm configuring with
./configure --prefix=/opt/net/r
which records some error messages in config.log, but returns
R is now configured for sparc-sun-solaris2.9
which indicates to me that configure ran OK.
I'm running this on Solaris 9, using GCC, G77, G++ 3.4.1.
