a simple solution is:
vec.strings <- c("ab|c|d", "a|b|c", "a",
"|a|b|c|d")
f <- function(pat, vec.strings) sapply(strsplit(vec.strings, pat,
fixed=TRUE), length)-1
f("|", vec.strings)
but probably there are better proposals.
