As mentioned, MASS (modern applied statistics with S-plus) is a classical
book for R. You should only be aware that
- the book do not mention R at all
- you need slight modifications for the example code (e.g. you should often
load a specific library)
- you should install packages VR and MASS (the last one is presumably
installed by default), these packages include all (?) the necessary code for
the examples.
- you should also take a look at the book's home page (it can be found from
http://www.r-project.org/doc/bib/R-publications.html), there is some
information for R usage.
I really recommend that book, do not be afraid that it only speaks about
S-plus.
If you are more interested in programming yourself, and less in
pre-programmed packages, you may consider ,,S programming'' by Venables
&
Ripley. This book speaks about R explicitly (because it is newer?).
On the URL above, you may find more recommendations, but I think the others
are more specific.
