As ?delcol in Splus says
This is support for the function drop1.lm(). It is not intended to be
called directly by users.
so you should not be using it (in R or S-PLUS).
R has a different implementation of the internals of many functions.
It is not a question of `it disappears': R is not a version of S-PLUS but a
separate implementation of the S language.
