What you can do is something like list("3"=c(1, 2), "2"=c(1, 5)) So you can use the "numbers" as characters. That's also possible for vectors: vec <- c(1, 3, 2) names(vec) <- c("8", "9", "10") But be careful, I won't use it anyway ... !
