I am having trouble installing R on a Unix system. The system is
mips-sgi-irix6.5, and the version is R-1.1.0. The .tgz file is in
/usr/people/guest. This is a guest account; I do not have superuser
privileges. The .tgz file was unpacked with 'gzip -dc R-1.1.0.tgz |
tar xvf -'. This made a subdirectory, R-1.1.0. I cd'ed to R-1.1.0
and changed the second uncommented line in the file "configure" from
"ac_default_prefix=/usr/local" to
"ac_default_prefix=/usr/people/guest
/R-1.1.0". The only subdirectory of /usr/local/ here is /lib. I can't
install things that far up the tree. Still in the subdirectory
R-1.1.0, I typed "./configure --prefix=/usr/people/guest/R-1.1.0".
The configure seemed to go well. It found gcc with no problem. when
I typed "make", the necessary functions and files seemed to be made.
When "R" is typed(in any directory), the message is always
"Fatal error: Probably no X11 support: the shared library was not
found"
I changed the variable "R_LD_LIBRARY_PATH" in the script file
"R" to
"/usr/people/guest/R-1.1.0/src/include", since that is where the
packages
are. The same error message appeared. The same happens if any options
are added, such as "R -g=none" or "R --help". The X11
directory is in
"/bin". I have tried to follow the instructions in the
"INSTALL" file
under directory R-1.1.0. What am I doing wrong? I did successfully
unpack and install R-1.0.1, but then could not install the contributed
packages. Does some superuser need to install some utility or reset
permissions on some directories? Does R need to be installed farther
up the tree? These may seem like very basic problems to many to many out
there,
but the people who made the R package for UNIX may have assumed more expert
knowledge than I have. There is a local UNIX support team here. They
aren't
particularly familiar with statistical or mathematical software, as far as I
know. Should
they be able to install R? Any help would be much appreciated.
