The short answer is no. Part of the reason is that R and S-PLUS differ in
the way they manage objects in memory. It is possible to link GIS and R,
though - I've been able to move data back and forth between GRASS and R
without major difficulties (under Unix). What kind of link are you
thinking of, and for what kind of data - raster, point or polygon?
