Slow Network performance with ArcView and Samba
...a NT Workstation with FTP takes about 10 seconds. The transfer of the same file with using the NT-Explorer takes also about 10 seconds. The load of the same file (it is a tiff file) with a application called "Imaging" takes 10 seconds too. The load of this file with the application "ArcView" (from the company ESRI) takes about 100 seconds. Since the endusers only use the ArcView application, they are very annoyed with the slow performance of the samba server. If we put the file on a NT Server the load times are in every case only 10 seconds. I have tried to set different param...

Arcview .iwg temporary file
We have about 15 file servers with samba (version 3.05, 3.0.14 and 3.0.22) on Redhat 7.1-7.3 and FC4. Opening on it with arcview a .dwg file is fine, it creates a good temporary .iwg (some MB), like using the file on a local disk. Only in one installation (RH 7.3 updated, with kernel 2.4.20-28, samba 3.0.5 and 3.0.22) we have a problem. Arcview write always a .iwg file with a 8 byte size, and finally it crashes. Of course we...

AutoCad and ArcView
Hello all, Just curious if anyone else has a SAMBA server that is serving up AutoCad and ArcView files to users on Windows. We are utilizing a RAID 5 setup on dual 2.8 GHZ 4 GB RAM Intel Controller card (all latest firmware, BIOS etc...etc..) Only 4 users are accessing the server, but it seems after a few days the server starts to choke up, lock files, and it causes a hardware issue. (We...

Slow directory listing in ERmapper and ArcView
Hello, I'm running Samba 2.0.6 on a Sun Ultra1 as a file and print server for a GIS teaching lab. Samba has solved a bunch of problems for us but one serious one remains. Getting a large directory listing from within two applications, ERMapper 5.5 and ArcView 3.1 running on win95, is a factor of 10 slower than getting the same listing from a local drive or a win95 machine serving SMB. Transfers with other applications and Explorer are fast. I haven't yet used tcpdump-smb, but snoop shows the same number and approximate size of packets to get th...

Extremely slow Samba3 performance with ArcView/WinXP
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi! I have a user who is running a Samba server to store data files for his ArcView 3.3 application. Client operating system is Windows XP professional. With Samba2 (2.2.8a) this was working quite fine, it usually took less than a few seconds to load and render one of the GIS presentations with ArcView. We then did an upgrade to Samba3 (3.0.20b) and suddenly the same operation n...

ArcView + Samba: Performance nightmare under Linux, ok under Solaris or HP-UX
...formance problem without a solution yet. Now I'm hoping someone on this list has an idea (In fact, I already reported the problem to the mailing list but got only one reply which did not help) So I'm here for another try... Here's the situation: Some of our users runs Windows XP with ArcView GIS 3.3 by ESRI. In this application, ArcView is used to render some scientific data which is stored in files on a Samba server. If the samba server is running under Solaris or HP-UX, a typical run of ArcView takes about 30 seconds. This is ok. If the samba server is running under Linux, a run wi...

writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other A rcGIS compatible file
...s in the DBF outside of R and then fill them in with R. But I did not write any code to calculate byte offsets and such and that are needed when creating a shapefile from scratch. So what I do when I want to create a new shapefile from within R is write out the format required by the ASCII Tool ArcView (Avenue) script. This script is available at: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=11442 The format is simple: Works for space delimited ascii to point, polygon and polyline. The format for point ascii file is id, x, y (no comma for real data, space delimited). For polygon & polyline...

Dear R experts, I am new to the list and R software. I need to convert arcview file to Winbugs having R has middle package. Got from friends that it is possible following the steps: 1. Hi Is there anyone who can help a reporter (me) with the following: I want to use the bivirate k-function to determin if burgerbars are clustered around schools. To that purpose I’ve been told to use the bivirate k-function, but my program Arcview doesn’t contain that. Im stuck on a dead end – how to I for a start get the data into R? Linking R to GIS
Dear All, Has anyone worked with linking R to both ArcView and MapInfo GIS systems? My desire is to capture object selection from GIS and pass to R and to return spatially based statistical model results from R to GIS. If both could simultaneously access the same data file this would be a bonus. My inclination is to put together some routines based on ODB...

writing polygons/segments to shapefiles (.shp) or other ArCGIS compatible file
I am not sure a previous e-mail reached the list (no mail aknowledgement from R-boundle etc.). The question was how to write polygon or segment coordinates into a shapefile set or any other ArcGIS supported format. The library shapefiles seems to do something but the documentation is a bit beyond of my mind.... and I cannot get the meaning of the functions write**** and its application to the case
