This may have been announced before but there are now both Debian GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux packages for R-0.61 on the CRAN archive sites. The master site for CRAN is http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R/ That site provide a list of available mirror sites. Within the CRAN archive sites the pre-compiled packages for Linux are located in the bin/i386-linux directory. Under RedHat you can install the package directly over the network if you know the URL for ftp access. For example, to use the version on my mirror at franz.stat.wisc.edu you would, as root, run rpm -Uhv ftp://franz.stat.wisc.edu/pub/R/bin/i386-linux/r-base-0.61.0-2.i386.rpm The Debian GNU/Linux package will become an official part of the Debian 2.0 distribution in the next few days. This Debian distribution, based on the thread-safe version 2 of the GNU C library, is still in beta test. The .deb package on the CRAN sites is built against an earlier version of the C library so it can be installed on systems running Debian 1.3 or 1.3.1 Disclaimer: These packages are contributed to CRAN for your convenience. As always when installing software over the network, you should be cautious of the security implications. R-0.61 builds fairly easily on a Linux system and you may want to consider picking up the sources and compiling it yourself if this network installation looks too insecure for you.
