This has been reported previously (over 2 years ago on R version 2.2.1) and was associated with a bug in readline, which is the underlying functionality that handles getting input from the user in the console. Since you are running a 2.4 series kernel, it suggests that you may also be running an older Linux distribution. Be sure that your system is updated, including the readline libraries, the current version of which is 5.2. HTH, Marc Schwartz
