R mailing lists: move from majordomo to [procmail+mailman]
We have locally collected good experience the last few weeks using procmail-spam filtering, inclduing spamassassin to the procmail filters. The last two spams that went past the majordomo filters (the "traditional ones I've been using) through to R-devel both were not delivered to me, be but caught by the filters. I have now collected a bit more of a week experience using the new scheme also for R-core (and ESS-core) and few other larger lists but with *much* lower volume successfully. Also, all the R-SIG-* and the bioconductor lists are handled by the new scheme. This also entails that their web interface (including archives) can now be advertized as much as you want, since I hope the new spam protection will suffice (and be tweaked to become better, too). Have a look at the Web interface at http://www.stat.math.ethz.ch/mailman/listinfo/ As indicated a few days ago, I want to convert all the remaining R lists ASAP -- but carefully. I plan to do R-devel quite a bit before R-help (and R-announce), partly because the list is quite a bit smaller (and has no "gateway" as the R-announce -> R-help one). I'll send another e-mail here, before the (visible) action really start. This was the only feedback I got.>>>>> "Michael" == Michael Dewey <michael.dewey@nottingham.ac.uk> >>>>> on Thu, 14 Nov 2002 15:14:45 +0000 writes:Michael> I looked at the page you mentioned in the body of Michael> your post, but I got a series of messages about Michael> your security certificate first, before I got Michael> through. It's (b) and (c) b) We use https (secure layer stuff) but cannot give out completely painless certificates. [Rd] R-devel: now moved from majordomo to [procmail+mailman]
I have done the announced move now (~ 2 hours ago). The biggest changes is probably for the former subscribers of "R-devel-digest" : You are now subscribed to R-devel with the "digest" option activated. Also note that the digests are now *daily* (instead of 3 times a week). This could be changed with some effort, but does not correspond to general Mailman setup/philosophy/documentation. Further, currently the digests are sent at noon (localtime aka MET or {i.e. UTC+1 or UTC+2 in "summer time"}. This also corresponds to mailman defaults, but could be changed easily. Feedback welcome, to me privately, or to the list if appropriate. I'm particularly interested in the observed delays (visible via the message headers, e.g.), since mailman has a different way of sending things out.
