We are currently investigating our http and ftp logs in order to get a hold on which parts of CRAN are rather popula and which not (because our computing center wants to know if all the traffic generated by CRAN is really necessary). One thing we stumbled about that generates a lot of traffic are the daily snapshots of the R sources, which are mirrored to all CRAN nodes daily: the mirroring seems to generate much more traffic than there are actual downloads (at least from our site). There are 3 versions each saved as .tar.gz and .tar.gz making a daily total of approx. 30MB CHANGING EVERY DAY. Downloads seem to be more in the order of once per week. Question: Would you see it as a strong loss if these were available only from 1 or sites rather than every CRAN node? Please respond in private if so, I'll post a summary to the list. This does not affect the sources of R releases (which get downloaded very often), only the daily snapshots from the directory $CRAN/src/devel.
