I was thinking of it as encompassing both software build automation and OS build automation. Especially in the case where your software requires a correct configuration of your OS. I see Puppet as being a valuable tool if you don''t particularly want to deal with a RedHat satellite server or the like. Also, the combination of Puppet and a distro like Gentoo would allow you to modify USE flags on the fly and compile and install different versions of the software on different OS configurations with very little effort. That was my thinking anyway. For what it''s worth, David Lutterkort of Red Hat is an active member and contributor to Puppet and I''m sure he has some plans to get Red Hat onboard if he isn''t already doing that.

We''re EOL''ing our Satellite server and switching outright to yum for builds and Puppet for initial and ongoing configuration/management. If we didn''t have a business requirement for (read: vendors only support...) RedHat, we''d ditch the distro entirely and stick with Debian, for which we have much better luck. But until that day comes, I''d be happy to consider testing whatever people come up with if someone feels so inclined to explore this. -- Digant C Kasundra <digant@stanford.edu> Technical Lead, ITS Unix Systems and Applications, Stanford University
