Nut upsuser - Sep 2011 - Looking for a low cost USB UPS that supports shutdown.return

Hello,

I am new to NUT (running Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) and NUT 2.4.3 (from the Ubuntu
package).

I have been trying to use an APC Back-UPS ES 750, but when running the Shutdown
Design test it doesn't cause my computer to power back on. It appears that
it makes it all the way to powering off the computer during shutdown instead of
having the UPS turn off power to the computer and then restoring it later after
main power is back.
>From my research, it appears the I need a UPS that supports the
shutdown.return functionality (in addition to configuring my computer to return
to its last known state after power restored).
Can anyone tell me how to get this functionality with the Back-UPS ES 750 or
recommend a UPS that does provide it?

I have the same problem with a CyberPower 425VA.  I don't believe the 
problem is the UPS - I believe it's the shutdown sequence.

As far as I know, your UPS should work fine.  The problem here, as you 
noted, is that instead of the UPS being instructed to cut power to the 
computer, which would then make it turn itself back on when power was 
restored, the computer completes a full shutdown.  Since power is never 
cut, the computer never turns itself back on.

My tests on Ubuntu have shown that there is something in the shutdown 
sequence that stops the "/sbin/upsdrvctl shutdown" command from
running
- I haven't yet been able to isolate it further.  If you run this 
command just from a normal shell, power will be cut to your computer 
immediately.  But, when it is run as part of /etc/init.d/ups-monitor 
during the halt procedure, it fails and shutdown completes normally, 
which we do not want.

I will be running more tests today since I want to get this working, 
I'll post again if I find out anything else.
