CentOS - Jan 2008 - yum update change kernel auto rebuild drivers centos 5.1

Is there any "formal" mechanizism by which after a yum update , and 
kernel change
that "drivers" can automatically be recompiled and a service
restarted?

Do I need to make my own?

DKMS works for this. see dag's repo and how the nvidia drivers and
others are handled.

Dkms is one option. It can re-compile modules and reinstall them, but it takes 
some initial work to get it started.
