[asterisk-users] Cisco SPA3102 Thoughts & Other Recommendations
I'm looking to build a VoIP solution for 100+ service vehicles that have WiFi hot spots installed (with cellular uplinks). Currently we are trying out Skype wireless handselts and Majick Jack. I'd also like to consider an Open Source solution that can bring the calls back to our data center [possibly integrated without our existing BCM 3.x VoIP PBX]. For hardware someone on the IRC channel suggested the Cisco SPA3102 and a cordless phone? This devices appears to be able to register to an Asterisk server (there are many related forum and BLOG posts). Does anyone have an opinion for or against this device? Alternatives. It is important that the device, or handset, be wireless/cordless. The WiFi hub in the vehicle has both WiFi and an ethernet jack. Sadly our Nortel BCM 3.x system does not support SIP, only H.323. So an Asterisk server would have to handle the mobile VoIP devices and interface with the Nortel BCM. -- openSUSE <http://www.opensuse.org/en/> Linux for human beings who need to get things done.

The echo is almost impossible to get rid of, so test it first before you buy this unit; Google for "SPA3102 echo" and you will notice I'm not the only one. I'm planning on replacing these units. I bought Sangoma U100 but have not test it yet; installing the driver is a challenge and on Sangoma web-page instructions look very clear but reality is different. Eg. using it with asterisk 1.4 is a problem as zaptel-1.4 has bugs and will not install on Gentoo. The other day I run onto AG-188N from CIGEAR it looks interesting (price is reasonable) considering it has IAX and SIP in one unit. http://www.cigear.com/iaxsip-ata-digium-iaxy-s101i-substitute-ag188n-p-1501.html?zenid=213650e26b0b93dbf028a8f326e63089 Anybody experimented with this one? -- Joseph

I'm confused about the need for an ATA with an FXO port in a car? Phone -> PAP2T -> ETH -> HotSpot -> Internet -> Asterisk ----- If the hotspots have ethernet ports, you could go with a PAP2T (2 FXS) and you could power it with a 12V to 5V converter. Same with a PSTN cordless phone but I'd be careful about security. Aastra -> DECT -> BaseStation -> ETH -> HotSpot -> Internet -> Asterisk ----- Snom and Aastra have DECT phones as well with less than 12V power requirements. Unidata -> WiFI -> HotSpot -> Internet -> Asterisk ----- Unidata makes pure WiFi phones that migth also work in this situation. I can help you source some test units if you want.
