I don't follow the status of Asterisk, and I don't know which version of
spandsp it currently expects. The agx addons for Asterisk 1.4 have just
been updated to work with spandsp-0.0.6pre3, and a couple to tiny
changes should let them work with 0.0.6pre4. 0.0.6pre4 is the latest
version, and represents a considerable step forward from 0.0.5. If 0.0.5
doesn't work for you, then 0.0.6 won't - complete failures are because
your setup is broken, not spandsp. However, for those getting good FAX
results with 0.0.5, 0.0.6pre4 should be a valuable upgrade.
There are some error recovery conditions 0.0.5 does not handle well.
0.0.6pre4 passes all but a couple of minor issues in the TSB85 test
spec. Many of the changes made to achieve that are in areas of error
recovery. It produces visually better results when it has to clean up
corruption in pages. It also behaves better with a couple of quirky
machines what send a burst of junk at the end of T.6 pages (spandsp was
actually doing something wrong, but it only shows up with weird pages).
0.0.6pre3 handles the receiving of TIFF files with mixed pages sizes and
resolutions. 0.0.6pre4 finally handles the sending of such TIFF files
(provided, of course, they are all valid FAX sizes and resolutions). The
T.38 processing, especially T.38 gateway processing, should be more
robust. the T.31 modem has been gaining T.38 features. Its not quite
complete yet, but an integrated audio + T.38 interface to HylaFAX, efax,
or even Windows FAX may be on the way. T.38 over IAX is not defined, so
I expect this will be in the form of a SIP modem - something like
IAXmodem, but using SIP and supporting audio + T.38.
Of course, lots of other modules, besides the FAX modules, have changed
in the latest version.

Steve
