Those active cards are "active".
They do a lot of audio and dtmf processing onboard.
This way it can be done by hardware specially made for this
kind of job instead of using the host CPU and a software
layer.
My experience is that handling a simple BRI line works great
with the cheap cards, but bundled BRI lines or setups with multiple
ISDN2 lines really benefit from the active cards.
