Anyone know how to obtain firmware and starter .cfg files for Polycom phones? Despite registering at the Polycom web site, I can't locate this stuff.
Polycom are analy retentive when it comes to this. You should be able to get the older versions on their web site though. We purchased our phones through Alliance Systems, a Polycom certified reseller. Getting firmware was difficult, and they where very unresponsive, probably because we didn't pay them additional money for a support contract. Thank you to all who responded to my inquiry below. As explained by a few people, Polycom has a policy of withholding current firmware releases from users, thus forcing them to contact "authorized" resellers for support should they need this code. Similar to another reported experience, I attempted to contact the reseller from whom I purchased this telephone, but was unable to penetrate the screening process because I had not purchased a support contract at additional cost. So I was sitting with a one day old phone that had become a paperweight, and the other sources that *-users list correspondents had kindly referred me to were just not working for me. Perhaps I was doing something wrong. Having painlessly downloaded and used FW from other manufacturers' web sites in the past, I found this predicament exasperating. I contacted another reseller and agreed to purchase another Polycom model if they agreed to provide me with current firmware. After placing an order, I was given ftp access to a site for obtaining the material. Minutes later, I had restored the phone to working order. The sales rep at the second reseller explained that Polycom has this policy in order to "strengthen the reseller channel" which I thought was rather ironic. Well, he did make a sale, I suppose, but it felt like blackmail to this customer. I'm not terribly impressed by the second reseller, and I'm soured on the first. While I have no objection to paying for any kind of support, it does seem that the deliberate creation of impediments such as this do not enhance the image of Polycom, up and down the distribution channel. But of course, that is their privilege. As I stated, I like the phone, and it compares very favorably to others I'm evaluating. However, if all other things were equal (and they could become so with just some firmware improvements), this nonsense will drive me into the arms of a competing manufacturer in a heartbeat. It's needless grief to put your customers through, and that's just stupid, in my opinion.>-----Original Message----- >> From: Bill Michaelson [mailto:bill@cosi.com] >> Sent: Thursday, January 19, 2006 4:13 PM >> To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion >> Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Polycom FW >> >> Anyone know how to obtain firmware and starter .cfg files for >> Polycom phones? Hi Bill -> Thank you to all who responded to my inquiry below. Perhaps I was doing something wrong.I second your opinion that Polycom needs to change their policy on this. "Strengthening the Reseller Channels" is one of the more nonsensical justifications for not publicly providing updates for their own product. Particularly so, because most of the resellers don't know or don't care about SIP firmware. Polycom, if anyone there reads this, we will buy the phones anyway, and we will be more likely to do so if you just offer the latest firmware publicly. - Noah
I don't think you can beat the Polycom's for design, features, configuration options and functionality tho. :) -----Original Message----- From: Wilson Pickett [mailto:spamsucks2005@gmail.com] Sent: Sun 1/22/2006 10:32 AM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Cc: Subject: Re: [Asterisk-Users] Re: Polycom FW > I second your opinion that Polycom needs to change their policy on this. > "Strengthening the Reseller Channels" is one of the more nonsensical > justifications for not publicly providing updates for their own product. Especially in light of the fact that you can easily and legally get the source code and images for $50 Chinese phones based on the PA186 chips. Ok, the phones aren't anywhere near as good as Polycoms, but many good inexpensive phones do have easily accessible SIP and IAX2 images freely available, including in beta. Further, Polycom SIP phones have the longest boot time of any phone I've ever seen (something like 5 min, compared to a Sipure, less than 60 seconds) and the worst web interface of any device I've ever seen anywhere, so it isn't like they're defending the edge either. _______________________________________________ --Bandwidth and Colocation provided by Easynews.com -- Asterisk-Users mailing list To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We conducted focus groups, looking at several different vendors, before we decided to go with the Polycom. From the user interface perspective, the Polycom's won hands down. I was never involved with it, but apparently to configure the Cisco's you need to be converting hex??? Yuk! -----Original Message----- From: Wilson Pickett [mailto:spamsucks2005@gmail.com] Sent: Monday, January 23, 2006 6:19 AM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Subject: Re: [Asterisk-Users] Re: Polycom FW> I don't think you can beat the Polycom's for design, features, configuration options and functionality tho. :)Polycoms (I only have experience with a ip500) have many qualities. However, I think it's only a matter of time before entries at the $180-$200 price point begin beating it in many ways. Configuration? Yes, there are a zillion options, and many need to be hand edited in XML. The web config interface is next to useless. The Cisco/Linksys/Sipura already beats the Polycoms to a pulp on this issue. The menuing system badly needs to be redone by someone who uses a phone every day. Way too many levels on common operations. The physical design is superior, yes. The software design, sorry, no. Audio quality is the high end reference, but lower end phones come close. Functionality? Nah, a lot of cheaper phones have more and easier to use fonctionality. Again, the Sipura comes to mind. My IP500 has had more spontaneous reboots than any phone I've ever owned (many IAX2 phones do this from time to time bu they are all using beta firmware). <reminder>This is an opinion and should be thought of as carved in stone. It may be of interest to people who have never seen any of these phones though.</reminder> IOW - YMMV _______________________________________________ --Bandwidth and Colocation provided by Easynews.com -- Asterisk-Users mailing list To UNSUBSCRIBE or update options visit: http://lists.digium.com/mailman/listinfo/asterisk-users
They had those in the focus groups too. I think it was Snom, Sipura, Polycom and Cisco. One of the reasons the Polycom's won, was that comlex star codes where not required to perform most of the functions of the phone. -----Original Message----- From: steve@daviesfam.org [mailto:steve@daviesfam.org] Sent: Mon 1/23/2006 10:49 PM To: Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion Cc: Subject: RE: [Asterisk-Users] Re: Polycom FW On Mon, 23 Jan 2006, Douglas Garstang wrote: > We conducted focus groups, looking at several different vendors, before > we decided to go with the Polycom.
