Michael Robertson, founder of both MP3.com and Lindows, has launched a new company to supply inexpensive SIP phones ($129 for two) and related services. See today's press release at http://www.sipphone.com/tiki-index.php?page=SIPphone%20Inc My question for the list is who will be the first to report on the compatibility and usability of the SIPphone with Asterisk? The functionality described in the press release suggests the phones are pre-configured to work with Robertson's service so one issue to be resolved is how to reconfigure the phones to use one's * server.
No pictures on the website... this doesn't bode well. I don't think it's a scam, certainly, but it has the hallmarks of a not-well-organized effort. There was nothing in the FAQ that really referenced anything about using the phone with other systems other than the IPTel-powered platform that they apparently are using. No configuration notes, no manuals, no tech guides, nothing. They want me to put down $129 for something I've never seen, even in a brochure. Very, very amateurish. It seems to be the cheapest source anywhere for 1-piece SIP phones. Nikotel.com (also in San Diego) sells the same phone for $100 with a $100 calling-minutes credit.> The functionality described in the press release suggests the phones > are pre-configured to work with Robertson's service so one issue to > be resolved is how to reconfigure the phones to use one's * server.Since sipphone.com appears to make no money at all off the free SIP directory services, they might not be inclined to lock down the phones. It doesn't make much sense to me, but it appears Robertson intends to make money just selling pre-configured phone hardware. The sample units from Grandstream were $60 a while ago, and $75 MSRP. Doesn't seem like much markup, so I'm curious to see how this plays out. I'm a total Asterisk newbie just figuring it out now, so I probably won't be the first to get these up and running. -Steve
It's just a proxy service like fwd it will work with asterisk... The phones they are selling with the deal are Grandstreams. It's very likely that they just have been preloaded with their settings, and probably point to their own tftp server. simply create fake dns entries and a static route so that it looks on your network for the ip of their tftp server... I'd guess that you could still do firmware upgrades... so that's a Grandstream for $65 ...
