Its hard coded in but you can circumvent it if you really want like this:
library(zoo)
# make a copy of plot.zoo
plot.zoo <- zoo:::plot.zoo
environment(plot.zoo) <- .GlobalEnv
box <- list
z <- zoo(1:5)
plot(z, bty = "n")
rm(box)
