What commands did you try ? What worked and what didn't ? Which site
did you refer ?

In the Ubuntu command line, try:
sudo aptitude install r-base
And for a list of R packages that you can install from the Ubuntu repositories:
aptitude search r- | grep [^A-Za-z0-9] r-
Install them like this:
sudo aptitude install r-cran-package-name
