R help - Jan 2008 - increasing smoothing in GAMM (package mgcv)

Is there a way in GAMM to increase the amount of smoothing (something like
min.sp in GAM)?

This is a large-data problem with binomial response.  I can get something
like the desired effect by
using very few knots, but this seems like a kludge.

-- There is nothing built in I'm afraid - the only way I can think of 
doing this would involve re-writing the pdMat classes that mgcv supplies
in order to estimate smoothing parameters via calls to lme... not a very
enticing prospect.
