o Yes, upgrading to ESS-5.2.0beta would help:
There you type "_" *twice* to get a single "_" inserted
o OTOH, in all versions of ESS (and Emacs), you can type
"C-q _" which means ``quote _ '', i.e. ``literal
'_'''
(and this applies to all other emacs keys in all emacs modes)
