R help - Aug 2003 - Reducing matrix dimension

Hi,

I wonder whether someone can help me with this query.  

I have a 12(cols) by 9(rows) matrix X.  I need to reduce this matrix so that
it contains 'n' columns (eg.  reduce X into a 3 by 9 matrix).  What is
the
best method to do this in R?
