[R] Problems with make pdf (R-patched_2002-07-15.tar.gz)
After configure, make and make check on a linux Suse 7.3 box, I run make dvi and make info with no problems but get a lot of garbage to my screen during make pdf. Is this normal? Is there a bug in this part of the installation? This is part of what I get on the screen: humboldt:/usr/local/R-patched # make pdf make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/R-patched/doc' make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/local/R-patched/doc/manual' PDF/LaTeX documentation: reference index ... [R] Problems with make pdf (R-patched_2002-07-15.tar.gz)
What precisely do you consider to be `garbage'? make pdf does create hyperlinks and so you should expect more processing than make dvi.>From the extract below, either you interrupted on page 30 or there wasa fatal error in pdftex on that page. But, that is nothing to do with `garbage'. Those messages from from TeX, which is quite diligent in making sure the final output looks good. TeX compose pages by putting together "boxes", and text/symbols/etc go in the boxes. When the horizontal boxes don't fill up the space, you can a underfull warning with a "badness" rating. Typical symptom of underfull hbox is that the line has very few words and gets "stretched out" to fill the line. By analogy I suppose you can guess what overfull hbox means. The typical symptom is a line going over the right margin. In draft mode, TeX would print a black rectangle at the end of an overfull line. These kinds of things are nearly impossible to fix for documentation that can be processed into multiple formats. You still get the whole thing, just not as nice looking as TeX think they should be.
