Status: fac.design() {and "friends"} for constructing
(anova) designs has been part of "New S" and is described in
chapter 5 of `The White Book' (Chambers & Hastie, 1992).
This S/S-plus code is copyright and we are not supposed to
"steal" the S-plus code and just port it to R.
I've started recently to write plot.design() from scratch
{using the white book as API definition}, since for us,
plot.design() is much more importantly missing than fac.design.
Unfortunately, I'm not far yet, but will hopefully finish this
in ten days or so.
We need volunteers (R *is* a volunteer project !) with moderatly
good S programming skills who help out for the more general
class "design" utilities. Note that the conf.design() you
mention probably could be used for fac.design().
If you do want to help out, please respond to me, privately.
I will summarize plans to R-help and we may have part of a
discussion on R-devel { : "Devel"opment of new features for R}.
