Dear help-list, because of my request, ESS was installed in our faculties'' UNIX-net by our system administrator. At the moment, we have only R installed to be used with ESS, no other statistical software. Reading the ESS online-manual and the R-FAQ, I did not find out how to start ESS. The chapter on "Using R" in the ESS-manual seems to be missing (this holds as well for the WWW-manual at the eth-zurich). I understand the "How to start ESS"-part as follows: I simply have to start emacs and then I can start an S-session with M-x S. This gives "no match", which is not very surprising, because S is not installed. But M-x R does as well give "no match". If I start emacs with a source file with the ending ".S", I get a kind of syntax highlighting. For ".R", this does not work. Very strange. Possible reasons: -> I missed an important passage while reading the manual or FAQ. -> Our installation did not succeed. (But our sysadmin told that everything looked nice). -> There is something to do which is explained nowhere. Can you help me? Now, this is _NOT_ a simple request, but sounds like it''ll take some work to debug a faulty installation. I and maybe other, would like to know this as well but for Windows. At this time I load|start ESS manually each time I start EMACS. I couldn''t find a better way yet. Dear list, I apologize for not using the ESS-list, but for reasons I am not aware of, it is not possible for me to reach any address at eth-Zurich by e-mail (I tried ESS-list, M. Maechler and F. Hampel). However, I would like to know at least: a) *If* ESS would be installed correctly, *could* I start R-processes by M-x R? How else? b) What is meant exactly by "I start ESS manually each time I start emacs" from Y. Gauvreau? It is explained in the ESS README file found in the tar.gz package. -- Michele Alzetta -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- r-help mailing list -- Read http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/~hornik/R/R-FAQ.html Send "info", "help", or "[un]subscribe" (in the "body", not the subject !)
