Hi, You will need a board and CPU with Intel or AMD virtualization tech if you want to run Windows VMs. This is more or less available on all current dual, tri and quad core AMDs and the vast majority of Intel Core and all I5/I7 CPUs. Board wise AMD systems nearly always support virtualizach but some older Intel Core2 boards do not. PCI pass through support is also useful and is available on the server and workstation chipsets from Intel (Including X58 and Q35) but only available on the very new AMD SR56X0 chipset for AMD. More cores is very useful for Xen so try to get at least a quad core CPU. The Xen hypervisor will need about 512MB RAM for itself. You can then allocate the RAM to your VMs depending on what they have to do so for light use VMs 512MB would be enough for Linux and 1GB for Windows (Eg. 4GB could manage 2 Windows VMs and 3 Linux VMs in that config). If you have a cpu and motherboard in mind then post links and we should be able to tell you if it has virt tech and PCI passthrough support. The latest one (inexpensive) i tested was ASUS P5Q3 ( no VT-D support of course). Requires ACPI patch from Yu Ke to load 2.6.31.5(6) under Xen. Patch was submitted , but doesn''t look to be committed to JF''s Git Repo Boris. P.S. RAM 4x2 GB Kingston KVR 1333. Performance pretty good for it''s price. --- On Tue, 11/24/09, Tapas Mishra <tapas@abhitech.com> wrote: From: Tapas Mishra <tapas@abhitech.com> Subject: Re: [Xen-users] which desktop boards support Xen To: "Outback Dingo" <outbackdingo@gmail.com> Cc: xen-users@lists.xensource.com Date: Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 8:32 AM On their wiki http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/VTdHowTo they say abut on supported boards so I wanted to know from those who have used if I want a low cost motheboard then what can I look for On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 5:15 AM, Outback Dingo <outbackdingo@gmail.com> wrote:> Yes on the under 2GB memory I have a both ASUS P5E-VM DO AND P5QL PRO boards > working fine one dual core / 4 gb and one quad core / 2gb > > On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 8:11 AM, Tapas <tapas@abhitech.com> wrote: >> >> I want to purchase a motherboard and processor for working on Xen which >> ones >> should I purchase will Xen be able to run on a system with less than 4 GB >> memory. >> >> >> _______________________________________________ >> Xen-users mailing list >> Xen-users@lists.xensource.com >> http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users > >-- http://www.abhitech.com _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
