[Xen-users] fail of xm create

Hello,

I have a small fail with my first Xen install. Il have before reading
docs and FAQs and send quenstion on xen-fr list without success. So i
try to translate my mail in english to post in xen-users mailing list,
excuse me for my bad english.

I have hoped to find an easy way in using Xen packages from Mandriva
2007.0 (for x86_64) where i found xen binaries and compiled xen
kernels.

With a doc about Xen in mandriva 2006.0 from xenfr.org web and some
other stuff take on web, i succes starting 2.6.17-5mdvxen0 kernel on
my computer. I also start xend and xendomains.

I construct a virtual host disk in a file, inclding ext3 fs,
copy/update of files of my runing OS (based on docs items).

I start a config for my virtual host from xmexample1, using
"file:/...", and no network for begin. You can see this config
in first line of logs at the end of this mail.

After many tries of virtual hostname create, i always get the same
2 lines : 

# xm create x1
Using config file "/etc/xen/x1".
Started domain ExampleDomain
#

And I get back the prompt. On web i see surch trace where my two
lines are usualy folowed by many lines of boot.

I have try somes changes : ''-c'', with network, and with
folowing
ramdisk config. I get always only the same two lines.

xm create /dev/null ramdisk=/boot/initrd.img \
      kernel=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-5mdvxenU \
      name=ramdisk nics=0 vcpus=1 \
      memory=64 root=/dev/ram0

In xend.log i just see my virtual host noticed ''crashed'' but
without
begining to boot. I attache surch log (i use xen debug package) at the end
of this mail. 

Si if somebody who have more knowledges than me about XEN (very easy
because i am a small beginer) can see my logs and show me a way to
succes run a virtual host, i will be very happy. I can send all data
you were agree to see, and make all tries. I cas also resume answers
for next users.

if you want to get the console of the started system, you want to use
"xm create -c x1"

Please show us what this gives you, and show us xend-debug.log instead
of xend.log

I have missed it because it was only created at xend startup and not
at "xm create" time.  I have take long time to answers to your mail
because this log file show me some way of works, I resume here my
works and my actual state.

In first time the content of xend-debug.log was :

Link veth10 is missing.
This may be because you have reached the limit of the number of interfaces
that the loopback driver supports.  If the loopback driver is a module, you
may raise this limit by passing it as a parameter (nloopbacks=<N>); if the
driver is compiled statically into the kernel, then you may set the parameter
using loopback.nloopbacks=<N> on the domain 0 kernel command line.

I dont known why xen on mandriva need tu use veth10 (in fact only 8
veth are created)..., and because i configure my virtual host without
network...  It is not proof about link between this log and my fail, but,
because at last i need to use network, I try to solve this. 

So i try using loopback.nloopbacks=<N>.  
I sucess using netloop.nloopbacks=<N> with the grub entry :

but i loose network acces !!!
and i get the error :

I have read something about MII_NOT_SUPPORTED, so i try to change my
network config on eth0 to set this option at "yes" here is my modified
file /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0 :

This change nothing except than veth10 is replaced by veth0, xenbr0
become xenbr10 and special case vif0.0 become special case vif0.10.



So, this seem to be a conflict between my basic network config, and
the xen bridge. So i try to bypass this by runing the bridge on my
secund and unused network interface : eth1. 

I remove /etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth1 file and i change
xend config :

I get back network access.

Uff, that''s quite a lot. Sorry, I have no time to parse it completely
now, and didn''t see anything obviously wrong.

Maybe it''s just that mandriva''s packages are broken, and you
should
try xen from sources, or the xensource binries.

Did you try the demo cd - can you run a vm with it?

I first try mandriva for qwick start, but if this can not work, i''ll
try
your others solutions.

which demo cd ? ISO file on Xen web site ?

Yes. I think if you get this running, then it''s quite sure that in
general xen should run on your machine, and that it''s either a problem
of the xen packages you use, or of the configuration you created.
