The background bit.. I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850 server on which I am trying to install XEN 3.0.3 The server has 2 built in gigabit Broadcom NetXtreme II Ethernet cards. (Using the bnx2 module) I am running Debain, I can boot to the XEN DOM0 kernel. I have disabled one of the network cards in the BIOS. (As I heard that there is a little confusion between dell and Debian in figuring out which card is which) I compiled XEN from the sources using the linux-2.6.16.29 kernel Now here is the strange bit... When I boot to Dom0 eth0 gets an IP address from the DHCP server. But when I try and ping that same DHCP server using the eth0 interface, I get "Destination Host Unreachable", (when i ping anywhere infact - not just the DHCP server). Ideally I would like to assign a static IP address to the server, but when I do that in /ect/network/interfaces again I get "Destination Host Unreachable". (I have double checked and confirmed with another IT admin working here that I am using the correct config) I can also run "dhclient" on the peth0 interface, this again gets an IP address from the DHCP server, but when I try to ping the DHCP server on that interface I get no reply what so ever. If i go back into the BIOS, and change which port is disabled, and then reboot the machine eth1 then gets an IP address from the DHCP server (just - it takes ages to get one and sometimes fails completely!), you can then ping places. BUT as i said above I would like to staticly assign the IP address in /etc/network/interfaces, as soon as I do that, again I can''t talk to anything (ping or otherwise). Does anyone have any idea why I can get DHCP addresses but can''t ping anywhere? I don''t have any sort of firewall running and ICMP packets are allowed on the network. This is my first Xen install and I have fairly intermediate knowledge of Linux and Debian. Thanks in advance. (Using the bnx2 module)Simon. I have just spent 2 weeks resolving this issue with a new Dell PowerEdge 2900, with much frustration. It turns out that the problem is with the IPMI management firmware in the Broadcom nics on the motherboard. The following wiki page from NCSA described how to disable the management firmware which solved my problem (the 2900 has the same nics). However, you forgo the ability to use IPMI using the on-board NICS, which is acceptable in my configuration. With the management firmware enabled, the bridge (xenbr0) passes no traffic. http://mywiki.ncsa.uiuc.edu/wiki/Dell_PE1950_NIC_Firmware_Workaround Apparently Dell will have a firmware fix sometime early 2007 as noted here: http://lists.us.dell.com/pipermail/linux-poweredge/2006-November/ 028197.html It took a lot of digging to find this and I didn''t hit it until I googled using "poweredge xen" in the search. Hope this helps, Mike. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
