Hello I need to use a virtual machine with SUSE 10.0 as the host and Windows XP Pro as the guest. There is a XEN button in YAST2 bu the error I get from that states I must have a XEN kernel installed. I have had nothing but problems when trying even to simply recompile the existing kernel in SuSE 8.2 and 7.3. I gave up on that idea when I moved to 10.0. I cannot afford to be in the situation where I have no useful kernel and no workstation. As a freelancer I simply do not have that comfort zone and I currently do not have 48 hour 20 day weeks to resolve the issues that might arise as well as getting any paid work done. I basically need something that works and is stable and robust. I''m only using a 32 bit Athlon machine so I will have no 64 bit funnies going on. I have plenty of disk space for the installs required and expect to be able to dual boot from SuSE 10 and SuSE 10.1 within a day. If I were to make a dual boot SuSE 10.0/10.1 in the first instance, what issues do I have to cope with to install a XEN machine with 10.1 as the host OS? Is Xen stable on SUSE 10.1 with Windows XP Pro as a guest OS or am I going to get a total inability to run Windows just when I don''t need it i.e. is there anybody out there with experience of the Xen 3.x virtual machine with SuSE 10.1 as Dom0 and Windows as domN? Have there been any problems using the guest OS to install software - e.g. AutoCAD - within the guest domain? What''s the graphics capability like? I simply don''t have the time to get this up and running to then find out it''s unstable and the graphics just doesn''t port through so I sincerely apologise if some of these questions are answered in the FAQ but I would like to hear what users on SuSE 10.x with Windows XP Pro as domN (N>0) have to say of their experiences. Hi, You don''t specify what Athlon you have - but I get the impression its a 32-bit Athlon XP? I''m afraid the only AMD cpus that support a fully-virtualized guest OS are the latest ones based on the AM2 socket. This means that you will not be able to run Windows XP as a guest, as there is no para-virtualized, modified-kernel version of Windows XP to support running within the Xen environment. The only way unmodified operating systems can be installed is as fully-virtualised hosts, making use of the hardware virtualization support in the AM2 AMD''s, and Intel Core 2 Duo''s and some of the Pentium D series. Hi, > I need to use a virtual machine with SUSE 10.0 as the host and Windows > XP Pro as the guest. first you need a SVN-capatable CPU for running HVM-guests, f.ex. an Athlon 64 with AM2 socket! > There is a XEN button in YAST2 bu the error I get from that states I > must have a XEN kernel installed. See my howto on http://www.godacon.de/download/SL101_Xen_V12.pdf . I suggest using SuSE 10.1 reloaded or you have to install Xen 3.0.3 manually (don''t use the delivered Xen), may be the instruction for RHLE WS4 can help you or you find mor infos how to do it in the links. But it was quite easy to get running Xen 3.0.2 on an old SuSE 10.0 system and on an Ubuntu 5.10 system! -- Chau y hasta luego, Thorolf _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hi, > I need to use a virtual machine with SUSE 10.0 as the host and Windows > XP Pro as the guest. so you need at least Xen 3.0 and a system that supports hardware virtualisation (HVM). > There is a XEN button in YAST2 bu the error I get from that states I > must have a XEN kernel installed. Where is the problem? Just do what they are asking to do! Select the xen-kernel in YaST and install it together with Xen! > I cannot afford to be in the situation where I have no useful kernel > and no workstation. As a freelancer I simply do not have that comfort As freelancer you should know that RTFM is the most important thing in life! And reading news-archives can be a quite good idea too! > issues that might arise as well as getting any paid work done. You should name it "investment into the future", because probably you want to make money with supporting this in the future, or? > I basically need something that works and is stable and robust. So may be it would be the best to buy a commercial product, there you get more or less guaranteed support! > I''m only using a 32 bit Athlon machine so I will have no 64 bit You don''t need 64 bit for using HVM guests in Xen, but you will need a VT/SVN-compatible CPU. The Intel Pentium D 9x0 or CoreDuo and AMD Athlon 64 with AM2-socket do support HVM, a list of HVM capable hardware you find in the net! Windows ONLY will run on such a CPU, there is no way to use an Athlon XP or non-AM2 socket CPUs. For this QEMU or VMware is the only option! > I have plenty of disk space for the installs required and expect to be > able to dual boot from SuSE 10 and SuSE 10.1 within a day. At least use SuSE 10.1 reloaded for your experiments and I wrote a small howto with some infos according the Xen installation/usage with SuSE 10.1. -- Chau y hasta luego, Thorolf _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
