Hi all, I just wanted to ask around what distributions were used for production purposes? I decided to use CentOS 7. The main reason is because its EOL is in 2024. What are your reasons to decide for a specific distribution for your production systems? Regards Tim

Fedora vs. RHEL)? - Do you want to have all functions shipped with the OS or compile all/some parts of yourself? Not all Distros can act as a DC with onboard-packages. E. g. BIND on RHEL is compiled with --disable-isc-spnego - Do you need support? - Which Distro you have most knowledge with? - etc. Regards, Marc
I know about all these questions. So my question aimed at a discussion about production environments. I decided for CentOS, because I will mainly concentrate on Samba-related tasks while the OS should be as stable as possible and long supported. I'm coming from debian and debian based systems (ubuntu) so I needed to learn about CentOS. The last servers based on Windows run for around 7 years and are now switched off. All W7 clients were migrated to the new (samba) AD. I guess (and hope) there will be a client migration to a new windows version before I need to change hardware of servers or reinstall these. So my servers are dedicated ones and should run for years. However, security is important but fixes should be proven to be stable and not bleeding edge in a production environment - in my eyes. There always should be a good firewall where the environment is behind. For now I don't need Bind because my DNS setup will not be that complex. RedHat doesn't really support packages for samba-ad because they are working on replacing heimdall with MIT kerberos. So I am using sernet packages. But I do. I use Sernet packages and it's working fine. Am 25. You won't be able to use Samba AD DC functionality with Centos 7 without building it yourself. http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/535153-centos-7-samba-domain-controller For my uses of Samba I use Debian 7.
