We have a shell script that is using multiplexing a lot where the
hostname is normally ignored. With 6.5p1 it stopped working. 

The call

ssh -S <controlpath> dummyhost

used to work but results in "ssh: Could not resolve hostname dummyhost:
Name or service not known" now.

I changed the code to

ssh -S <controlpath> 0.0.0.0 

and now it is working again.

Has this been changed on purpose?

Avoid early hostname lookup when hostname canonicalisation is not
enabled

This is a side-effect of the hostname canonicalisation changes. 

Could you please try this patch? You'll need to use cvs/git -current or
one of the snapshots at http://www.mindrot.org/openssh_snap
