If you are an American, do you apply for Rails work based overseas ?
I am just wondering, I see jobs advertised in the UK, India and other places. I have to wonder if I should bother with such job postings as I tend to think I may be at a disadvantage if the pay is less or cost of living is less for developers allready living over there, but I am not reaslly sure. Any good recommended job sites ? I have been using that xml feed. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. You would presumably be paid in pounds, which convert pretty well to dollars at the moment, and your cost of living in the U.S. is almost certainly lower than the cost of living in the U.K. Regards, Andy Stewart P.S. My grasp of economics could be charitably described as threadbare :) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Re: If you are an American, do you apply for Rails work based overseas ?
I have found that North American (US & Canada) salaries in IT beat those anywhere else. Essentially, if you are an American, you won;t get paid what can in the states unless you go to the Middle East. I have done that and, provided you work for an Arab Governmental agency there, you can do very well. They do what they say they will do, and I have found them to be generous. Working for corporations or individuals there can be dicey however. However, IT (programming) nowadays there is pretty much dominated by the Subcontinentals, who have deluged the place working for lower wages than in the past. Generally, I would say you are far better off to work in the states. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Re: If you are an American, do you apply for Rails work base
I''m in the process of offshoring myself. I''m moving my family to India. I have a startup project that would be much easier to pursue without having to sustain the standard of living costs we have in the US. If I pick up telecommuting side jobs I''ll actually be putting more money in the bank than I could in the US. Even if my hourly rate is discounted. Be aware that programming jobs tend to pay pretty low there. If you land a managers postion you could do much better. None of that matters if you find living conditions in big Indian cities to be intolerable, many do. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. I have been told that the UK is essentially a third world country ever since the end of the second world war. I would imagine the pay might be lower, but since I would like to get more experience in Rails, if they would hire me for a few months it might be good even if I earned a significantly lower salary. I would imagine the pay in India would be even lower. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. I might like to spend some time in India, visit the dalai lama and see some gurus, but I''m not sure I''d want to live there. For one, the rock scene is even worse over there (I''m a musician). --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Well, I read Scott Rittiers book on Iraq before the invasion and learned that there was no WMD before we went in, so I was ahead the masses on that one. You would think that with satellites and a big budget of intel our gov would know something, but then the question is: is it incompetence or conspiracy ? If you go with the former it seems the level of incompetence is incredibly high, go with the latter, many don''t like conspiracy theories, though I may have heard they are gaining popularity. but if I admit I am not an authority on England. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. surf wrote:> Well, I read Scott Rittiers book on Iraq before the invasion and > learned that there was no WMD before we went in, so I was ahead the > masses on that one.I knew that, and all I do is filter snips of mass-media news. Keeping Iraq WMD-free was Saddam''s only way to prevent the Bush family from orchestrating an invasion, for a decade, and he knew it. As soon as they had a window of opportunity, they took it anyway.> You would think that with satellites and a big > budget of intel our gov would know something, but then the question is: > is it incompetence or conspiracy ?Tip: Valerie Plame''s job at the CIA is no (longer a) secret. She was the lead investigator into Iraq''s potential for WMD. The boring work, like reading all the shipping manifests into and out of the country, connecting the dots, etc. She said they didn''t have any, and the Bush administration "outed" her to send a message to the CIA that they should provide more cherry-pickable product in the future.> If you go with the former it seems > the level of incompetence is incredibly high, go with the latter, many > don''t like conspiracy theories, though I may have heard they are > gaining popularity. Some conspiracy theories are just an ink-blot test. We''re doing fine here, thanks, and working for two global IT consultancy companies prior to current freelancing, I can testify that we got paid considerably more in the UK than the US guys did. p.s.
