RailFrog: A proposal for a Rails CMS (and request for involvement)
Guys, I''ve put a little bit of my time and money where my mouth is and launched the "RailFrog" site and proposal (www.railfrog.com) with the aim of getting the ball rolling on something potentially great: "RailFrog is a user-friendly, open-source web site deployment and content management system built with Rails; producing well structured and standards-compliant pages with Web 2.0 goodness." I''d love to have your feedback and help. I really desire no ownership in this, other than to take the initiative to get it rolling (and hopefully be involved in the development). I''m not a programmer (although I have pretended to be one in my own mind at times) and I don''t have any practical experience in an open-source development project (heck, I can''t even get Subversion working, or even my mind quite wrapped around it, yet ;). So, obviously there''s going to have to be some good (and patient) programmers involved. Any help would be appreciated. Anybody interested in taking this ball and running? www.railfrog.com Thanks for your time. Robert Pierce busyguyinla-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org

Sounds great. You might want to talk to Justin French [1.] who was thinking along these lines with an app called TextThing [2.] Both links are down as I write this but I guess will be back soon. [1.] http://www.justinfrench.com.au [2.] http://textthing.com Richard Sandilands

Coming from a PHP camp, I think I have tried about 80% of the PHP CMS out there and would like to get started in Rail and Ruby on some project. I dont have any experence with Ruby or Rails but have a strong desire to learn. So count me in on this, I will contribute as much as I can. I have cmsish thing up and running. I am putting some finishing touches on it. It still needs lots of work and I am looking for some people to help out. The homepage tells you a bit about how it works. I am trying to get the signups working right now(when I find the time). I have a couple of sites running on it now that I manually created. Anyway, have a look www.similarthings.com and here''s the mailing list: http://lists.similarthings.com/mailman/listinfo/similarthings-discuss Scott Burton -----Original Message----- From: rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org [mailto:rails-bounces-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org] On Behalf Of Robert Pierce (BusyGuyinLA) Sent: Monday, June 13, 2005 5:14 PM To: rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org Subject: [Rails] RailFrog: A proposal for a Rails CMS (and request forinvolvement) Guys, I''ve put a little bit of my time and money where my mouth is and launched the "RailFrog" site and proposal (www.railfrog.com) with the aim of getting the ball rolling on something potentially great: "RailFrog is a user-friendly, open-source web site deployment and content management system built with Rails; producing well structured and standards-compliant pages with Web 2.0 goodness." Re: RailFrog: A proposal for a Rails CMS (and request forinvolvement)
Hmm... While I''ve loved some of the blogging tech out there, I''m definitely in the camp of folks who are looking for more of a traditional CMS page-based solution that has some of the flexibility of blogging tech (RSS, plug-ins, etc.). And, god, there''s then having a CMS that would work for actual CLIENTS. While I, as a developer, can hack and code any number of things together on the back-end, I''m still amazed at how unable a lot of clients are in managing a site on an ongoing basis (and maintaining the integrity of the design and layout as a result). SUGGESTION: There are a number of different Rails CMS efforts happening now and would be really wonderful if we could get these folks working together on a consolidated effort to start. Am sure offshoots could come from the baseline code, but can''t imagine that the interests/needs that folks are programming for are altogether that different. Do love the project outline/intention/principles that Robert has created for RailFrog -- that might serve to be a wonderful starting point. Would love to hear some thoughts.

Re: RailFrog: A proposal for a Rails CMS (and request for involvement)
First off: congratulations on pulling together this initiative. I''m sure a lot of people feel the way I have about RonR (dipping toes in, but not wanting to get *too* wet just yet), but jumping in with both feet on an idea like this is just what is needed! I''ve had a fair amount of experience working with both large-scale enterprise CMS''s and smaller-scale open-source solutions, but have never quite found the tool which fits comfortably into my belt - the problem with most CMS systems is that they either do too little, or try to do too much. For a couple of years I''ve been responsible for developing in-house CMS solutions (both generic and bespoke), and with RonR rearing forward, I''d be very keen to put that experience into an open source project. I come from both a technical and creative background, with a healthy side-order of usability/standards and that day-to-day client liaison nonsense, so can contribute in lots of different areas. As a suggestion: planning would seem to be the key to making something like this a success. Building a forum of ideas from real-world experience of what is desired form developers and clients alike would prove a good bedrock for moving forward. I''m sure the skills are out there, and as people get to grips with RonR, and it develops as a technology, those skills can grow and be amalgamated into a fine project! Despite some niggles, and rough corners, I''m loving Rails - perhaps something like this will encourage me to love it more. -Phil On 14 Jun 2005, at 1:13 am, Robert Pierce (BusyGuyinLA) wrote:> Guys, > > I''ve put a little bit of my time and money where my mouth is and > launched the "RailFrog" site and proposal (www.railfrog.com) with the > aim of getting the ball rolling on something potentially great: > > "RailFrog is a user-friendly, open-source web site deployment and > content management system built with Rails; producing well structured > and standards-compliant pages with Web 2.0 goodness." > > I''d love to have your feedback and help. RE: RailFrog: A proposal for a Rails CMS (and requestforinvolvement)
I would love to get involved in a Rails based CMS. Recently I have been taking stock of what is out there having a client implementation of a commercial CMS where I work. Without going into details, I''ll just say I''m not impressed. What I''ve really been toying with, and haven''t determined if it''s feasible yet, is a CMS built on Subversion. Not sure how practical it is though. The other problem is that I''m just now picking up Ruby and haven''t done anything outside of the "ToDo" tutorials.
