After some work, I have lighttpd -> fastcgi -> ruby -> rails -> mysql setup on a Xen based Virtual Private Server. No Apache! I also have php-fastcgi working to enable phpMyAdmin. I''m using a $20/ month VPS account from unixshell.com <http://unixshell.com> and I chose the Ubuntu distribution. I was asked to leave my shared host because they didn''t want development code on their servers. I left as soon as I realized that someone else''s buggy code could bring down my site at any moment. I would also be horrified if my buggy code brought down theirs. The VPS approach provides much better isolation. If a few of you are interested, I could write a setup tutorial on the process. It should work exactly the same for anyone that starts with this type of account. Perhaps then we could share some suggestions on security and optimization. If no one is interested, I''ll save myself the effort. I also havei''ve got a similar setup (nothing worth looking at sadly) - it''s essentially the same as building on your own server. Nothing VPS-specific, other than perhaps being a bit more tight with memory allocation. Is there something else you ran into that is different from a normal server setup or you''re just offering to help those not familiar with running all that stuff (perhaps only used shared hosts)? -- ________________________________ toddgrimason*todd[ at ]slack.net
There is nothing different from a normal server. Only the premise that someone else could start with exactly the same setup and expect exactly the same results. Subtle differences in servers or distribution installation procedures make generic setup difficult to guarntee. I wanted a server pre-configured this way. I didn''t want to learn (suffer) the configuration process. I just want to develop scripts. I''m guessing their are others with this attitude. I''d guess that would probably be helpful to people. The parts may all exist on the wiki though - maybe you could update/check those and assemble from that instead of from scratch(?) Might save you some time... -- ________________________________ toddgrimason*todd[ at ]slack.net

I would really apreciate such a tutorial. Having some problems getting anything but Webrick to run stable or even run.
