What are your favourite Web GUI design tools ? I am looking for anything but can''t find anything for Linux Anyone is using something nice ? Thanks -- Karol Hosiawa
gvim :) Seriously, rails doesn''t have great support for more traditional web based design toole (Dreamweaver, etc.) since its views are not pure xml. I''m pretty sure that just about everyone on this list writes their views by hand and doesn''t use a WYSIWYG tool. A long time ago, I used quanta and I remember it being pretty good, but it''s been a few years. Whats a Web GUI design tool? Anything that pretends to be one should be banned. Nothing can design a web GUI better than a normal text editor, an active imagination, some design skills and quick fingers. I would say a text editor with auto indentation, syntax highligthing and maybe a quick browser preview button. All of which can be found in the wonderful, easy to use, fast as heck, EditPlus. But thats a windows program, not sure if there is a linux version of it. For linux, vim or xemacs are good. Check out Nvu. It''s not Dreamweaver/GoLive, but it''s free and might be enough. --Steve
I wasn''t trying to be closed minded or an egomaniac.. just trying to point him in a better direction. Design tools just don''t cut it. You end up depending on them and not really learning HTML. I know because I once used them as well. Now the real question is.. what is more "helpful", telling someone that they should do something a different way (or better way in the eyes of the person giving the advice), or just giving them the info they were seeking? I would say the former is more "useful", but thats just my opinion. Either way, good luck finding the tools you need and I hope I didn''t discourage you in any way. It''s pretty nice. Sincerely, Tom Reinhart tom-V0YqjHVuocLQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org http://AllTom.com/

Knowing what other people''s approaches are is very helpful/useful. Actually I wasn''t thinking about things like Quanta, Bluefish or Nvu (definitely not Vim :-D ) I was thinking about something "quick", to sketch a layout of a page, something similar to Microsoft Visio. We have checked out different programs for Vector Graphic (Inkscape SVG Vector Illustrator, Sodipodi (this one is nice:), Sketch, Kontour and some others. It is very easy to draw boxes, cricles, text and resize them, change color. But these programs lack web controls (checkboxes, drop-down lists etc.) and don''t provide a functionality to create a library of these to reuse them. So anyway we ended up with Open Office Impress, to quickly sketch the layout and page flow. Maybe not the best idea but it works so far :) The format is portable to any other operating system.
