That is an option for those that wish to pursue that route. I prefer to work towards a fully supported version of Ruby on Tiger instead of patching Rails to support Apple''s broken version of Ruby. So I will await Apple''s inevitable 10.4.1 update to see if they address the issue as reported in the Bug Reporter. For now I have a fully functional version of Ruby and Rails so I am able to be productive. -- Lon Baker Speedymac LLC http://www.speedymac.com AIM: spdemac Skype: spdemac On Apr 26, 2005, at 7:30 PM, rails-request-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org wrote:> rails only ''depends'' on readline in the sense that we ''require'' > irb/completion and readline for the console. Readline is a library that gives you some additional value when its there but ruby can do without it. The problem with readline is that its under a bad licence which prevents many people from using it. Also nothing is stopping you from downloading the readline.tar.gz and compiling it -- Tobi http://www.snowdevil.ca - Snowboards that don''t suck http://www.hieraki.org - Open source book authoring http://blog.leetsoft.com - Technical weblog

As was said earlier in the thread, readline is only needed for rails because it adds a peripheral user interface enhancement. Since the company that perhaps ships more preinstalled copies of ruby than any other has chosen not to include readline, it probably makes sense for rails to degrade gracefully (use stdin/stdout for i/o). Tobias: If you just install readline without recompiling ruby, does it magically work with the installed ruby or does ruby still need to be rebuilt? The python community''s fix for this is that someone compiled readline.dylib for panther and by dropping it into the right directory, python''s extension recognizes it and readline ''wakes up''. Is that sort of thing feasible here? I don''t think it''s in rails'' best interest that it can''t run on the stock install of OS X (perhaps the most popular os among web developers) for the sake of a library as non-central to rails as this one.
