[vorbis-dev] [fwd] Problems with ogg123 on OpenBSD (from: ryancooley@yahoo.com)
Just as a reminder to our application maintainers. ----- Forwarded message from Ryan Cooley <ryancooley@yahoo.com> ----- Delivery-Date: Sun Jul 22 20:28:06 2001 From: Ryan Cooley <ryancooley@yahoo.com> Subject: Problems with ogg123 on OpenBSD To: feedback@vorbis.com While I hate to send complaints about something that is Free(tm), I really hoped and expected the Ogg Vorbis team to have put at least a small ammount of work into making vorbis work under the BSDs. As it is, when compiling libao I get errors such as "SNDCTL_DSP_GETODELAY undeclared" and "RTLD_NOW undeclared". While I'm not a C programer, I had the imagination to declare the variables needed. With that error gone, I was free to install the libao library and comile the rest of the package. When testing I discovered that ogg123 had no idea how to actually play a sound. I tried the "-d oss " option, to discover that oss didn't exist. I took a trip to google hoping for some more information... I did everything from making a rc file to linking /dev/dsp to /dev/audio... I comiled again, found that the DSP error above was now being generated (originally only the 'NOW' error came up) so I suppose the link did what it was meant to do. However, I unfortunately found the same problem plaguing me, no audio. I can write the output of an ogg file to a wav so I'm not completely stranded, but a two-step pplaying process is less than ideal, and will probably re-encode all my music to mp3s relatively soon. I hope for everyone's sake that this problem is fixed soon (before v1.0 is released) as it will seriously affect the adoptation of the format is all BSDers are unable to listen to their ogg files/streams. Despite annoyances I've experienced, I'm glad ogg exists, and hope it will take over as the dominant format soon. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? (I help maintain the ogg, vorbis, libao, and vorbis-tools packages for NetBSD.) The patches and fixes are available with these packages. The problem (I believe) is that the patches are specific for the operating systems. In other words, the patches aren't made to be directly integrated back into the original source without breaking functionality for the other operating systems. I am glad you brought this up. The many fixes have been mentioned on this mailing list several times. Hopefully, the ogg, vorbis, libao and ogg123 developers will integrate the BSD-needed ideas into real versions. And this will make it easier for me and the other ports/package maintainers when the new versions are released so we don't have to patch them again :) (But if I do have to make patches again, I'll work on making them correct so they can be integrate directly next time.) All of FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD have libao, libogg, libvorbis, and vorbis-tools in their respective ports/packages collection. This is the place where any BSD user with an inkling of understanding will check for these applications first. I personally maintain the FreeBSD and OpenBSD ports. My email address is right there in the ports for people to report problems or ask for help. -- Christian "naddy" Weisgerber naddy@mips.inka.de --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body.
