samba - Feb 2005 - SLES9+winbind+NT PDC unable to access home shares

I'm running Samba 3.0.9 on SLES9 as a domain member with an NT4 PDC, using
winbind to authorise domain users.
I have set up a general share for all users which works fine and is
accessible by all users but I am unable to set up the home shares correctly.
When attempting to connect via smbclient I get the following:-

tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

What does this mean and where should I be looking in order to try
to correct this? I have run wbinfo which seems ok and getent passwd and
group both show users and groups as expected. I have googled and read
through the howtos and examples on samba.org but cannot seem to find the
answer. Any help would be appreciated.

I guess that the authentifcation does not work.

Please test with wbinfo -a.

wbinfo -a rob%pass
plaintext password authentication failed
error code was NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER (0xc0000064)
error message was: No such user
Could not authenticate user rob%pass with plaintext password
challenge/response password authentication succeeded

So it does suggest an authentication problem but how do I fix this?

This much indicates success, actually.  You need to test with the fully-
qualified username (domain\\user) however.
