Ext3 users - Sep 2001 - visibility of ".journal" file

Is a ".journal" file supposed to be visible in root directories of
ext3
filesystems?

I have two ext3 filesystems on a single box.  One, mounted as "/", has
a
visible ".journal" file in the root directory.  The other, mounted 
elsewhere, does not.

What's the story here?

Sorry for the self-reply, but I neglected to provide software 
version/configuration details in my original message.  The system in 
question has:

	linux-2.4.10 kernel
	ext3-2.4-0.9.10-2410 patch
	ext3 filesystem compiled in (not module)
	no other patches

	e2fsprogs-1.22
	util-linux-2.11f

Usually, a visible .journal file means that you converted the filesystem
from ext2 to ext3 while it was mounted.
