Dear Sirs, i'm trying to set up my samba server as WINS server My smb.conf (global section) is: [global] #Parametri di configurazione Server netbios name = LIGHTLORD server string = Samba %v on (%L) workgroup = T-PLAN security = user bind interfaces only = yes log level = 3 log file = /var/log/samba/samba.log.%L.%m max log size = 100 os level = 255 local master = yes preferred master = yes domain master = yes domain logons = yes encrypt passwords = yes wins support = yes name resolve order = lmhosts bcast in /etc/lmhosts i've defined: 192.168.1.1 LIGHTLORD#20 192.168.1.9 myclientest#00 192.168.1.20 client In the tcp/ip setting, under wins server, i put the samba server address 192.168.1.1 Ok, here is the problem: there's no name resolution If i try (from a windows xp/98/ME client) ping client ping myclientest there's an error: impossible to find the host. Verify if the name is right and try again (i don't know if it's the right english answer since i've the italian microsoft version so i did a translation) I run samba with: smbd -D nmbd -H /etc/samba/lmhosts -D in order to read the lmosts from another directory Ok, i think i told everything so ..... please help! This is on 192.168.1.1 you have wins support = yes and no "wins server" entry. On all other machines samba and NT/2k you configure wins server = 192.168.1.1 (in smb.conf or the Windows network setup) Regards Uli
I read that in order to have WINS work correctly, one need to have the "guest account enabled for the SAMBA WINS server. Is this correct? I currently have WINS enabled and no guest account. When I go to the "Hood" it shows a blank page. I have checked, rechecked, checked and rechecked my settings. Any ideas? Thanks.
