Hi, Thought I posted this already two weeks ago. Haven't seen any reactions yet, so I post it again We got the following problem here: Every now and then, users are unable to save Word or Excel documents on our Samba server. We already tried a couple of things: disabling oplocks, increasing oplock break wait time, putting the documents on a new share, ... but to no success so far. The problem seems difficult to reproduce, but we do have one log level 10 file and a tcpdump. the only errors we get in the logs are one or more of the following: - read_data: read failure 4. Error = Connection reset by peer ( lib/util_sock.c:read_data(434) ) - Error: oplock break from client and no oplock granted on this file ( smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(761) ) - oplock_break: client failure in oplock break in file ... ( smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(833) ) - oplock_break: receive_smb timed out after 30 seconds. ( smbd/reply.c:reply_lockingX(4480) ) - Panic: failed to set gid ( lib/util_sec.c:assertgid(111) lib/util.c:smb_panic(1092) ) We're running Samba versions 2.2.4 and 2.2.5 and we're having these problems with both versions. On our clients we have Win98, WinNT and Win2000, mostly Office 97 , a few office 2000. Problem occurs with every Win/Office version. Any ideas/suggestions? Hello Johan. I'm having a similar problem, except its on opening the word or excel doc on the win2K machine. Just a shot in the dark, but I think its got to do with disk quotas, there isn't enough space, a word or excel doc takes up a heck of a lot of space. I thought this may be something new to look at, but the errors seem to suggest oplock problems. Hope you come right, tell the list if you do, I'll be looking for replies to this subject. We're not using disk quotas and we're having 42 GB of free disk space. Another thing I noticed is that when a user is unable to save a file , the log-files sometimes show that the client is, for some reason, opening and closing the file many, many times: [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(230) u0000900 opened file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/~$20020112W97.doc read=Yes write=Yes (numopen=3) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(211) u0000900 closed file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/~$20020112W97.doc (numopen=2) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(230) u0000900 opened file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/~$20020112W97.doc read=Yes write=No (numopen=3) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(211) u0000900 closed file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/~$20020112W97.doc (numopen=2) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(211) u0000900 closed file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/CK20020112W97.doc (numopen=1) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(230) u0000900 opened file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/CK20020112W97.doc read=Yes write=No (numopen=2) [2002/09/10 08:49:37, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(211) u0000900 closed file u0000900/MijnDocumenten/DATA/OPLPROG/CK20020112W97.doc (numopen=1) [2002/09/10 08:49:42, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(230) ... etc ... Just some random thoughts. You seem to have oplocks on. They are on by default. Have you thought about strict sync and sync always. You have them set to no. Have you tried making them yes? Maybe look at strict locking, too. These parameters are all share level parameters, too, and you have them in your global section. I am not sure what that means. The reason I didn't respond to your first post is that this is just a common problem with oplocks, I thought anybody would have told you that. concerning strict sync - sync always - strict locking: Well, I did take a look at those options, but because of what I read in the smb.conf man page, I thought I'd better leave them off (default). It looks like enabling them just slows things down? When a share level parameter is set in the global section, doesn't that mean that that option then goes for every share? I didn't put them there. I just left them at their default value (i.e. didn't put them in my smb.conf file) At 07:57 10/09/2002 -0400, Joel Hammer wrote:>[...] that this is just a common >problem with oplocks, I thought anybody would have told you that.Would you recommend disabling oplocks? If samba every 'panics' then it is terminating itself with extreme prejudice. You *will* corrupt files - if your program doesn't like having a half-rewritten file. Samba is changing to a new group id, but when it double-checked, it had not changed. Do any of your users or groups have negitive GIDs?
