Experts, I've just setup my first Samba server (on a SuSE 8.0 box). I have Samba 2.2.5 running. I just did a couple of simple performance tests and I was wondering if this is normal or not. I have the Samba server and an NT server. If I transfer a single large file to/from both, the Samba server is 10 - 20% faster. That sounds pretty good. :) If I copy the "c:\Program Files\*" tree to both servers, then the Samba server is 3x slower. That is surprisingly bad. :( Out of curiosity, I have tried disabling oplocks as described in Using Samba http://k12linux.mesd.k12.or.us/using_samba/appb_02.html, but it had no effect on the speed. I will go into production with oplocks on, but I was checking if it was the bottleneck. Is the above what I should expect, or is something mis-configured/mis-tuned?
