Hello, I've configured the smb.conf like this # name resolve order = lmhosts host wins # trying to prevent the need for name resolution mechanisms. However I don't really know how things work and was trying a trial and error approach. But my question is: Is it possible to use SAMBA without native broadcast using in its place files listing the names and IPs involved (eg: lmhosts)? Did anyone out there already accomplished this? Thanks for your concern. Karina Beatriz Paez Klatt <karina@uap01.uapar.edu> wrote We are running Samba 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.6 . We have 20 machines with W95 and 20 with Win NT 4.0 WorkStation. We need users log on any machine, and , no matter which one, or on what computer is, profile must be available. We couldn't do it. Any idea of how can we do it?, or where can we get info about it? TIA ok i only did it for 95 : i created a share named home which is defined to work with directory /home/users/%u so when user NAME mounts the share \\server\home he uses /home/users/name the same name for all users, but not the same directory. Next i created /home/users/name/.win95/profile for each users at each 95 station, i configured to use a startup script which run net use h: \\server\home and told to win95 that for user name the profile is in h:\.win95\profile little problem is that you need to have an entry in the registry for each user, telling user1 profile is in h:\.win95\profile user2 profile is in h:\.win95\profile I nerver found how to tell zindows that the profile for each user is in h:\.win95/profile for all users in one registry entry.... the trick I use to do it quicker is using policy on 95 This way permits you also to have users have one disk where they store they files and have them where ever they go (they use h: insted of c:), and you can also arrange so that their Netscape configuration is saved on h: disk, .... I hope this will help =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Michel APPLAINCOURT | E-mail : michel.applaincourt@umh.ac.be Computer Sciences Assistant | Phone : 32 65 373498 Universite de Mons-Hainaut | Fax : 32 65 373318 [The boy that you love is the man that you fear] =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Hi,> WINS service would be a good idea for win98/NT. Are you sure you > don't have hardware problems? Why would this be caused by a hardware problem? All the other services work as far as I can tell (mapping drives etc.). What is the advantage of having WINS server apart from reducing network traffic? I thought that you have connections problem also. WINS support is better for browsing than lmhost bcast or host. Also check and see if you have in smb.conf: domain master = Yes local master = Yes preferred master = Yes os level = 65 name resolve order = wins host bcast # if you have wins support = yes

Hi All, I'm trying to create a share that acts like the [homes] share. IE: it is only visible (and browseable) to a specific user when they are logged in. I have read that the [homes] share inherits the global browseable variable and therefore is only visible when the user is logged in - this is want I want - how do I do it? Thanks! David, Look in the man page for "smb.conf" for these options: public guest ok guest account guest only read their descriptions, and see if they work for you. RH73 samba2.2.7-1.7.3 Just getting a smb server going. Have some users who's login names are different from windows and Linux. Using a map file to map Linux users accounts to windows user accounts. When I watch the log.smb I see that the mapping is taking place however, the authentication doesn't. Would the fact that the Linux authentication is done by an LDAP server matter? The passwords are the same.
I tried to join my samba to wins NT so that win NT will be the authenticating server and I can log into linux with the wins NT accounts. But I cannot, though I tried this command Smbpasswd -j DYLNET -r PRIMARYDC And it gave me the following error cli_net_auth2:Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED cli_nt_Setup_creds:auth2 challenge failed modify_trust_password: unable to setup the PDC credentials to machine PRIMARYDC Error was : NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED 2003/02/24 07:25:24 :change_trust_account_password:Failed to change password unable to join domain DYLNET Pls I need help Lawrence
Hello all, I have edited my smb.conf file, I changed the name of my workgroup. Now when I do a smbclient -U% -L localhost, my workgroup doesn't show up. I did restart smbd and nmbd I think. If I use gnome system monitor when I first boot up, I can see the smbd running. After I kill it and then restart it, I don't see it running in system monitor. I don't know what to do.. :(

Hi, Could someone help me out please. I have a PC running NT Server 4.0 (SP6a) and another one running Redhat 8.0 with Samba 2.2.5: On the NT Server Side: The IP adress in set and the DNS server is the the same as the Samba machine and the Primary WINS Server also set to the Linux box -In the WINS Address tab: Enable DNS for Windows Resolution is set. -In the Bindings Tab: NetBIOS, Server, and Workstation have WinsClient(TCP/IP) selected I ran through the tests in the DIAGNOSIS.txt under /usr/share/<samba-version-number>/textdocs and I failed when the following is typed on the NT Server 4.0 side: net view \\Linux (name of the server) System Error 53 The Network Path was not found. Also, when I browse the network neighborhood: \\Linux was not accessible The Network Path was not found. How come I can see the machine then? And I can see the NT shares when I run "smbclient." Did I somehow setup a half-duplex mode which defeats the purpose of setting this up in the first place? Thanks Kamal Talati
