wine users - Nov 2010 - How to find out why an (old xp) application isn' t working

I need an how to or something. 

I can start the application but ones I open something it hangs. So what are the
steps I can take to monitor the application and see what it is trying to do.

(running wine-1.2.1 in ubuntu 10.10)
