wine users - Jan 2010 - wine iexplore white screen of death

On a fresh Ubuntu, sudo apt-get install wine

wine iexplore yields a white screen of death with a title bar for Wine.

I tried winecfg and tweaking settings, and I can get a desktop with IE WSOD
again, so no real progress.

The shell outputs a ton of errors/debug info, pasted below...

What have I done wrong?

Describe "white screen of death". If the system hasn't crashed,
and if you're still seeing things on screen other than white and perhaps
some error text, this is not what you call a white screen of death.

If instead you're just getting a wine iexplore window with nothing in it
(completely white), this is normal. Wine iexplore is showing a blank page and
doesn't have any sort of toolbars to make it usable outside other
applications that need some kind of Internet Explorer.

However, if you need real IE, Wine's iexplore won't work. It's based
on Mozilla's gecko engine. You can install real IE6 with winetricks, though
not everything works. http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

I really do need IE.

Or, at least, https://www.autotask.net/ seems to think so. :-(

Unfortunately, winetricks seems to work, but as soon as I login to that site, I
get bounced to a 404 page.

It does work from a "real" windows box though.

Complain with Autotask.

You could also manually set the way websites view your user agent. For example,
a browser called Midori allows you to have the browser actually identified as
Internet Explorer (instead of Midori). The site might work if you do this.

Install the User Agent Switcher plugin in Firefox.  That will get you the login
screen, at least.

If the site uses ActiveX controls, you are of course still screwed.  The
quickest workaround in that case is to run an old version of Windows in a VM.
