[Xen-users] Trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on centos 5.5 w/ xen4.0
As the title states, I am trying to install a PV ubuntu 10.04 domu on my centos 5.5 xen 4.0 dom0. The steps I have attempted are as follows: 1 - lvcreate -n ubuntutest -L 8G domuvg 2 - wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/xen/vmlinuz 3 - wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/xen/initrd.gz 4 - cat ubuntu.xen name = "ubuntu" memory = 2048 disk = [''phy:/dev/domuvg/ubuntutest,xvda,w'' ] vif = [ ''bridge=br2'' ] kernel = "/mnt/disk/vmlinuz" ramdisk = "/mnt/disk/initrd.gz" vcpus = 1 on_reboot = ''destroy'' on_crash = ''destroy'' 5 - xm create -c ubuntu.xen ... installation goes just fine ... 6 - grabbed the virtualized kernel and ramdisk from another running physical machine to use in step 7. 7 - cat ubuntu.xen.running name = "ubuntu-test" memory = 2048 disk = [''phy:/dev/domuvg/ubuntu-pv,xvda,w'' ] vif = [ ''bridge=br2'' ] kernel = "/etc/xen/ubuntu-kernel/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-server" ramdisk = "/etc/xen/ubuntu-kernel/initrd.img-2.6.32-22-server" vcpus = 1 on_poweroff = ''destroy'' on_reboot = ''restart'' on_crash = ''restart'' 8 - xm create -c ubuntu.xen.running Using config file "./ubuntu.xen.running". The "extra" line above should be whatever that comes after "vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-server" on menu.lst, with the most important ones being "root" and "console" - use pygrub/pv-grub Although I''m not sure whether your version of pygrub/pv-grub would have support for ext4 (which is the default for Ubuntu Lucid). I usually get around this by having a dedicated /boot with ext3. -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Or is the grub2 being installed on the domu going to rear it''s ugly head again? Also, how can I install grub on the domu if it won''t boot? When doing the install this way (http) it takes HOURS to complete due to some slow internet lines somewhere. This is a common occurrence I have seen with Ubuntu. Centos domu''s are not blindingly fast either but I can usually have one installed via http virt-install in an hour or so. I am almost to the point to where I would ask if anyone has a working ubuntu 10.04 64-bit PV domu and config for xen 4.0 they would mind sharing. Or maybe the patched pygrub files to work with ubuntu''s grub2 and ext4. That would be super helpful. I have almost everything else done for this. It''s always something though. Usually it''s easier to just start with using virb0, whicih provides NAT Network with DHCP. It should just work. Another alternative is to run "ifconfig -a" on domU and see if there''s an ethernet device showing. If not, try "lsmod" and "modprobe xen_netfront". If you already have an ethernet device on domU, it''s simply a matter of configuring it as usual.> >>> Is there an easier way to do this than with the "kernel" and >>> "ramdisk" options? Try http://bderzhavets.wordpress.com/2010/04/24/set-up-ubuntu-10-04-server-pv-domu-at-xen-4-0-dom0-pvops-2-6-32-10-kernel-dom0-on-top-of-ubuntu-10-04-server/ As for ext3 vs ext4, AFAIK whether pygrub/pv-grub supports ext4 depends on whether the compiling environment''s e2fslib supports ext4 or not. RHEL/Centos by default does not. Since I like to have "/" on ext4, I compromise by having "/boot" separated as ext3.> Also, > how can I install grub on the domu if it won''t boot?for PV domU, you don''t REALLY need grub installed. You could just start with empty /boot (on ext3), and create a file /boot/grub/menu.lst. OR, since you can already get domU running using kernel on dom0, you could just get networking up and install grub the normal way.> > When doing the install this way (http) it takes HOURS to complete due to > some slow internet lines somewhere.Yeah. And the silly thing is that Ubuntu''s installation does not allow you to specify your own mirror (at least I don''t know how) :P I get around that by: - locating the closest mirror from me - add an entry to dom0''s /etc/hosts. Something like IP_OF_MY_MIRROR us.archive.ubuntu.com - do a "pkill -HUP dnsmasq" on dom0, so the running dnsmasq will pick up the entry - set up domU to use virbr0 bridge (whose DNS provided by dnsmasq) - during domU installation, select "us.archive.ubuntu.com" -- Fajar _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I have the domu booting and all but I cannot get networking to install for the life of me! Kinda hard to install grub with no way to get files to it. ;) Any ideas where to start? _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Without networking on the domu that is near impossible. The only way I can think to do it is make a new lv, mount it on the dom0, download the package to that partition mounted on the dom0, unmount it and give it to the domu. While not totally out of the question, I would rather get networking up and working. _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
